Government policy should make every effort to ensure it is not displacing residents due to its policies. Property tax increases do that for people who are unable to meet that increase in their budget, especially those on fixed incomes, the unemployed, and those receiving forms of government assistance. We need to ensure our tax policy is protective of those who can least afford it.
- Increase development around major transit corridors and direct the increased tax receipts to a special fund specifically designated to help cover future property tax increases and paid out according to the residents ability to pay for the increase.
- Ensure any residents displaced by development are given relocation assistance and are ensured a stable living situation prior to demolition/development.
